How To Style Tweed In The Winter Months

Read our top tips on styling tweed in Winter, and create your own unique staple wardrobe with high quality fabrics from Linton Tweed.

Winter Styling Tips For Tweed

Tweed has a timeless appeal, and one of the things that makes it so versatile is the options that you have when it comes to seasonal styling. While it’s an all-year round fabric, the layering that many of us default to in the Winter months can make tweed stand out even more than usual. We’re giving you our top tips on styling your tweed pieces throughout the colder months of the year, as well as suggesting the pieces that we feel are must-haves for these seasons.

Why does tweed work so well for Winter?

There are a few key characteristics of tweed that lend themselves to colder climates.

Weight of the fabric

Tweed comes in different weights, with heavier, woven fabrics being those that will retain the most warmth. Our heavier tweeds are around 340-450g/m2, and they’re ideally used for creating heavier garments such as jackets. These heavier tweeds are also extremely durable, so they’ll withstand day-to-day wear throughout the year.

Texture array for styling

Tweed is available in lots of different textures, and this bodes well for pairing with seasonal palettes. We stock a huge variety of intricate textures, and some of the most popular options for the Winter months include:

Dynamic enough to layer up

When the temperatures drop, layering up becomes a must - and tweed is also perfect in this regard. You could invest in a lightweight tweed and layer it underneath other garments, or you could opt for a thicker, woven tweed and layer other pieces underneath it. In this way, there’ll be so many combinations that you can create from your usual staple Winter wardrobe!

Key tweed pieces we’d invest in for Winter 2025

If you were looking to add a statement tweed garment to your Winter wardrobe, here’s what we’d suggest:

Tweed jackets & blazers

We’ve already touched on this, but one of our top pieces to add to your rotation would be a tweed jacket or blazer. This is a timeless style and a wardrobe must-have for the chillier months. Choose one of our classic designs for a custom piece that withstands seasonal trends, from twill, herringbone, houndstooth, plaid and window-pane checks.

These garments make for effortless layering, whether they’re worn underneath or on top of other pieces. This also makes them easy to dress up or down, so whatever occasion you’ve got in mind, you’ll have a piece that can be styled perfectly.

Tweed coats

If a heavier, go-to garment is on your radar this year, a tweed coat would be your best bet. They’re hard to beat when it comes to practical outerwear, but tweeds’ striking texture gives them a touch of elegance - think ‘never off-trend’. Choose a longer style, or opt for short and cosy up with a cashmere scarf.

Our 100% wool boucle tweed piece dyes qualities mean that you can create on-trend handmade outerwear - these fabrics come in an array of both seasonal and trend predicted colours, dyed in house by our expert technicians.

Tweed skirts & trousers

Winter officewear shouldn’t make you feel any less put together! Tweed trousers and skirts are standout pieces that can be the focal point of an outfit in their own  right, and you don’t have to put too much effort into styling them. Tweed skirts look simple and stylish when paired with medium dernier tights and leather boots, and trousers just need to be styled with a simple wool jumper. There’ll also be plenty of ways to make these transitional come spring time, too.

Tweed accessories

If you wanted to add a tweed piece to your wardrobe that will see you through all year round, not just winter, we’d suggest going for an accessory such as a bag or scarf. Tweed bags are a firm favourite, as there’s no end to the ways that they can be worn, and in winter, they can spruce an otherwise plain outfit up without looking overdressed.

Accessories also give you an opportunity to look for brighter, statement outfit additions. Our couture tweed fabrics are world renowned for colour vibrancy, and our range of fantasy textured tweeds can be used to create unique, eyecatching pieces.

How to Style Tweed for the Winter months

We’ve given you a couple of tips already, but here’s all of our top pointers on styling a series of tweed pieces for the winter season.

Layering with outerwear

You can’t go too far wrong when you’re laying tweed. Whether you’ve got a coat or a blazer, it’ll look great paired with a neutral coloured jumper - think greige or black, paired with a burgundy or brown tweed.

Mixing textures

One of the simplest styling tips that we could share, and one that also gives you wear from other items in your wardrobe, is to pair tweed with other textures such as leather, wool, or cashmere. This gives your full outfit some variation in texture, and it can also enhance the overall look of the tweed itself.

Dressing Up for Formal Occasions

Take your tweed from day to night, and dress it up for any occasion. There’s nothing better for a Winter wedding or event than a full tailored tweed suit. and a skirt with heels and a trench coat could suit any evening function.
